Hypertension, according to John Hopkins Medicine, “is a condition in which the force of blood against the artery walls is too high”. When unmanaged, high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, heart stroke, and heart and kidney failure. Hypertension is usually not treated in people due to it not having any symptoms until it after the organs are affected or have given up. The main cause of high blood pressure is stress, and the effects of stress increased by an overuse amount of the following: alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs, and junk food.

Medications to stop hypertension are listed below: diuretics, including thiazides, chlorthalidone, indapamide, beta-blockers, alpha-blockers, calcium-channel blockers, central agonists, peripheral adrenergic inhibitor, vasodilators, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and angiotensin receptor blockers.

John Hopkins University researchers are determining the blood pressure at the root of the aorta, to better treat patients with high blood pressure that could lead to hypertension. Melatonin, a hormone primarily released by the pineal gland that regulates the sleep–wake cycle, is being researched as an antioxidant. Recent studies have shown that it may be protective in heart attacks and decrease blood pressure during nighttime. New research will be focusing on higher melatonin doses in certain patients whose blood pressure stays elevated at night.

According to John Hopkins University, “ Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the artery walls. The force is generated with each heartbeat as blood is pumped from the heart into the blood vessels. The size and elasticity of the artery walls also affect blood pressure. Each time the heart beats (contracts and relaxes), pressure is created inside the arteries.” The pressure is greatest when blood is pumped out of the heart into the arteries. When the heart relaxes between beats ( when blood is not moving out of the heart), the pressure falls in the arteries.

There are two numbers recorded with blood pressure. The first one is the top number, or systolic pressure, refers to the pressure inside the artery when the heart contracts and pumps blood through the body. The bottom number, or diastolic pressure, refers to the pressure inside the artery when the heart is at rest and is filled with blood.
